A Sitdown with Jesse Kelly-Landes of Amet and Sasha

Website: www.ametandsasha.com
Astrological Sign:  Aries
Trade:   I sew.
Year Your Business Was Founded:  2002
Education Background: History BA
Other DIY affiliations: The Super Sonic Soul Squad – an all girl dance team. Well, and Stitch of course; Babes in Business.
Myspace URL: www.myspace.com/ametandsasha
Favorite Historical Era: I’ve always had a warm fuzzy place in my heart for Anglo-Saxon England, around the time of the Viking invasions. Also, whenever the restaurant was invented. That was a pretty smart idea.
Favorite Thing To Do On New Year’s Day: have a tamale party. Invites are open to anyone who can blow my mind with an innovative tamale filling. Do you have what it takes??

Self-Employed? How Long? Mostly for about 3 years, I work a real job two days a week.

How did you get started? Starting the website was purely a procrastination attempt while applying to grad school. I blew off grad school, and here we are.

Biggest Hurdle you encountered? My piss poor web design skills.

Lessons learned the hard way? I am extremely clumsy around sharp objects.

Future Projects? I’m shifting focus a little toward custom work like wedding gowns and special occasion outfits. My portfolio website will be up shortly. And I’m gonna be on a TV show called Stylelicious. Heard of it?

Favorite Annual DIY fashion/craft event in downtown Austin? Funny you ask. Wait…. Who wrote these questions?? Well, it’s called Stitch Fashion Show and Guerilla Craft Bazaar… and it’s just that. Not only is it about a bazillion fantastically creative designers and crafters in one cozy space, we’ll keep you dancing all night long and give you the opportunity to win prizes to support charities. So I’ll see you there next November?

Favorite Indie Business(es)? Everyone in the ACM. I don’t know how I’d do this without these ladies… I also adore Parts and Labour, Lekkner, SuperMaggie, all indie publications, and people who have little storefronts in Austin. They make this city a better place.

Favorite Indie Magazine? I mostly read books. For serious.

Sage Advice? Don’t spend too much time worrying about what’s going to happen. Deal with obstacles as they come, not before you meet them.

Best thing about:
Running your own business:
I don’t have to brush my teeth for work, although it’s probably a good idea. So put that back up at sage advice, brush your teeth, even if you work in the front room of your house.
Knowing how to sew: I get to make my sister’s wedding dress!
Having a boyfriend who is a badass drummer: I just asked him and he won’t tell me what’s so great about it. He’s no help at all. Seriously, he won’t answer survey questions for me, what good is he anyway?
Living in Austin: What kind of ridiculous question is this? I don’t have all year to answer this survey. Sheeesh!

Worst thing about:
Running your own business:
There’s no such thing as quittin’ time.
Knowing how to sew: Hemming all of my boyfriend’s jeans.
Being Vegetarian: Nothing is bad about this at all. It does complicate my shoe fetish though.
Living in Austin: It gets kinda hot here in September.
